Reminder: Section 8 Vouchers and Credit Reports

Hello everyone,

There is a new scam floating around the internet that a few people have reported on regarding applying for Section 8 Housing Vouchers after getting a “free” (but not really!) credit report. Most people find the link to this misleading information at the top of the Google search results, so I thought this would be a wonderful time to post a reminder about how Section 8 Vouchers work in the Spokane area, and how you can get your credit report for free (actually free!) online:

  1. The Spokane Housing Authority distributes Section 8 Housing Vouchers for the region. There is a significant wait list to receive a Section 8 Housing Voucher, in fact it’s so long that the Spokane Housing Authority can only add names to the wait list every few years. (And even then, it’s a lottery format – in June 2011 more than 3,800 people applied and only 2,500 could be accepted.)
  2. AnnualCreditReport.com is the place to go for your yearly free credit report online. This site does not ask for your credit card number, it doesn’t have a “trial” period, and it won’t charge you if you forget to cancel. This site actually connects you directly with the three credit bureaus who are legally obligated to allow you to see your credit report once a year for free.
